Saving programs from DVR on another device?

So I have a bunch of "how to" programs on my DVR. How do I save them on another device. My current DVR is old and glitchy and if I get a new one I don't want to loose the information.
I don't care if it's fast or slow, I just want to save them

2. Does your DVR not have a cable that plugs into your TV?

I've never tried it but it seems that any video audio output would be a simple cable connection from your DVR to your recording device.

3. You mean the RCA outputs?

Yes I've got them... I'm curious on what to output the vid's to? Can I just output them to another drive? like a 1 terabite drive? and do I need some sort of voodoo software to capture the vid?
Questions questions question... I guess i'll just google the hell out of it. Maybe the geek squad?

4. You almost certainly cant transfer the data to a hard drive

And if you were to connect the RCA jacks to a recording device (VCR/DVD recorder) you might find the signal has copyguard imprinted on it, preventing recording.

That was the case with my DVR, although I found a device online that could defeat the copyguard signal, allowing me to make dvd’s From all the TCM movies I had recorded.

5. Short answer, you can't.

Long answer: You'd have to have some sort of video capture device hooked to your computer, and then capture the video in real time (kind of like copying from one VCR to the next back in the 80s/90s). Basically hook the outputs from the DVR to the inputs of the capture device, press play on the DVR and record on the recording software that is controlling the capture device.

7. Just a follow up on transferring vid's to iMac

So the easiest for me is to use my iPhone to direct copy from the screen the parts of the vid I want and edit it on my iMac using iMove.. Too many "I"s if you ask me.. uggh. If it's a recipe I just vid the part I want and transfer to the imac and edit.I'm not going for vid quality (although not bad) I'm going for information transfer. easy peasy.. Also gets my imovie chops going...YMMV, works for me..
