Related: About this forumWhere is the list of rightwing media sites we are not allowed to use like Fox News?

Some of them are obvious, like The Daily Caller or Russian (RT, Sputnik) or other state sites. Another one I remember that I've seen used here is Zero Hedge - and of course InfoWars. We could really use another list, I agree. I remember Skinner saying the only reason those types of sites should be posted was to disprove what they were saying.

(221,922 posts)Though Thom Hartmann might have been an exception - we mostly see his videos posted in V&M. I know that Russian and Iranian based sites were considered inappropriate for DU - as far as news stories were concerned. It's been awhile since I was a host, I mainly dealt with LBN, since, if you remember, initially there were different hosts for separate forums and my first DU gig was as an LBN moderator on DU.2 so I first volunteered for that forum.

(29,348 posts)Is Saudi Arabia pays a lot of attention to them and from what I have seen they do good reporting on Saudi Arabia. The Gulf nations pay a lot of money for favorable coverage or more likely omission in American media as well as around the globe.
I could understand Sputnik but from what little I have seen from Iranian news there is good reporting out of there though I wouldn't post any in LBN and would have to use a translator for most of it anyways.

I think what the issues are with foreign based sites - whether they're reporting news with a biased slant, as RT and Sputnik definitely would be. As I said in that old post, there are some sites that are definitely not okay for DU - which I learned about when I was a DU.2 mod - but those were mainly hate sites, Stormfront, etc.

(29,348 posts)Al Jazeera comes out of Qatar I think but they are fine. I don't know about RT but usually I can find another source to back up a USA story but I'm not sure about their foreign reporting. I'm sure their TV network is propaganda but Fox News is one of the most egregious worldwide.

(221,922 posts)FOX News is also considered inappropriate. I happened to catch about two minutes of FOX News recently at my dentist's office - and they were railing about Hillary Clinton's emails!! I mean WTF?? Of course I spoke to my dentist - who I know well - and she's "one of us," turns out some elderly female patient "requested it," so her assistant - also "one of us" - turned it on for her.
And I do remember Skinner saying that sites like that were okay on DU only if the point was to criticize them.

(37,468 posts)Trust me, you WILL be told very quickly that it is a right-wing site and/or not acceptable here. Just don't be offended if you're told it's right wing and/or unacceptable, because many of us have had to learn this also.
Rule of thumb: If you've never heard of a particular author or website, there's a good chance they
are right-wing. There are some obscure leftist sites, of course, but there seem to be many more
right wing sites.
