Mental Health challenges today are overbearing for many

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Emile (a host of the DU Community Help forum).

Depression amoung the youth, as well as drug addiction and hidden mental issues where the idividual is self medicating
are plaguing our society right now.

Families are struggling with finding ways to cope with no real hope on the horizon. And this mixed within the political divide that is destroying any real direction because help is in short supply

political division- even within families / this unconstructive reality is furthering the problems that I believe could be
solved, and I say that with the understanding that the challenges are daunting.

I became aware of depression when my young talented daughter became afflicted with it - it's difficult to diagnose and how to best
to treat to say the least can be anybodies guess since the first feeling you have about it is that - you are all alone and left to figure it out by yourself.

The nne thing I learned almost immediately was how wide spread it is - which was something I was previously in the dark about.

And there then, there are a myriad of reasons I know of that compound the problems - how to identify them and how to help, with the underlying thought that what we need most is a real discussion and a focus on the issue.

There are a lot of folks on the street who suffer from schizophreia who self medicate - and they won't accept any hope,
some of them are just so hooked, which is also part of a disease trend in this country that is not being discussed in a way
that could bring hope towards better mental health outcomes for a better life.

It's not just something that is new, just because I'm suddenly aware - I often begin to understand this premise
I know they say Abe Lincoln suffered from Depression - in many respects this seems true as I now know many folks who suffer from some sort of depression are in fact very intelligent / it's not just something you can attribute to someone's over all nature, apptitude or character.

Is this a problem with society in general? I'm sure it is in many ways.
We wonder if we even have a society that stands for anything good these days.
I'm pretty sure most people do stand for good - I'm getting older, and I do know that it is true.
I guess we do need to get louder - yet stay subtle and kind

But we got to talk
