Related: About this forumHome page right margin is clipped
Wed evening when I opened Du the right in all the home page listings was clipped by a few letters. Thurs AM the same. Then about 10 AM it flipped and was fine. After lunch it reverted to clipped. All the discussions are normal. This is android phone with chrome browser. My computer does not show anything lile this. It is hard to scan the the page listings when you have to stop to try to figure out the word that was chopped off.

(22,539 posts)Late in the evening, a few new items are auto-posted to the DU home page -- they're the most discussed LBN threads from the last few hours. When those threads are added to the home page, we have to provide some way to cut off the text because we obviously can't display the entire article on the home page. So the software grabs the first few hundred characters of text from the post and then puts a "..." at the end to indicate that there's more to read if you click through.
On weekday mornings I manually select the items for the DU homepage. Because I add the items manually, I'm able to select an appropriate amount of text and make sure it's formatted correctly. There's no need for an automatic "..." cut off at the end.
However, on mobile devices, the home page items, even the ones I've added manually, are truncated automatically with the "..." in order to save vertical space.
So that would be why you see the threads presented slightly differently at different times of the day, or on different devices. Hope that makes sense.

(214 posts)The listings are not clipped at the end but all along the right edge for each line. Because of word size and spacing some lines end with a full word but others are missing letters. If I turn the phone horizontal I can see the entire listing but I should not have to do that.

(22,539 posts)I've just heard about this same issue from someone else too. I haven't been able to reproduce it yet but it sounds like a bug. I'm putting it on the list.
There might a connection... I believe both accounts are seeing ads -- it's possible that a rogue ad placement is stretching the page too wide.
I'll continue to look into this.
