Assault Weapons
Assault weapons possess features specifically designed by the worlds militaries to make it easier for the shooter to fire a sustained, high volume of rounds into a wide area. As a result of Americas weak gun laws, these weapons entered our civilian marketplace decades ago, and criminals quickly learned how to exploit their military features.
In 1994, President Bill Clinton and Congress enacted a federal assault weapons ban. This law named 19 specific models of guns, and also banned copies or duplicates of those models. In addition, the law outlawed guns that had two or more specified assault weapon features. Guns that were legally possessed before the effective date of the law remained legal. Finally, the law outlawed the manufacture of detachable, high-capacity ammunition magazines which could hold more than 10 rounds.
Unfortunately, the law was temporary, designed to sunset in ten years. President George W. Bush stated during the 2004 presidential campaign that he supported renewing the ban, but in September of that year it expired without any action by either the President or Congress.
For years, polls have consistently shown that a majority of Americans want the ban extended. Law enforcement groups agree. Yet, assault weapons remain legal in our country, and are easy to buy, often with no questions asked. Additionally, assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines remain weapons of choice in mass shootings and attacks on law enforcement officers.

There is no reason that a peaceful society based on the rule of law needs its citizenry armed with 30-round [ammunition] magazines, states Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck during a news conference. Such magazines transform a gun into a weapon of mass death rather than a home protection-type device.
The far-right gun lobby continues to defend the manufacture, sale, and use of these lethal weapons under the guise of hunting Bambi, "sports" shooting, and overall popularity. Translation: We need to be able to use the Second Amendment Solution to overthrow the gubbmint when Billy Joe Bob (The Grand Dragon of the USA) gives us the green light."
An armed society is a dangerous society, and prone to vigilantism.

(54,770 posts)1. I think your last sentence is enough of a reason to ban these rifles. Way too many white wingers
arming up ready to take on "liberals," Blacks, Browns, Muslims, etc.
I'm sure the gunners will be screaming, but these are semi-autos, as if 50 - 100 rounds a minute -- in select fire -- won't kill a lot of folks.
Then, the gunners won't acknowledge how easy it is to modify these rifles to make them fully auto, or the legal accessories that make them very close to fully automatic.

And here are some white wing gun fanciers showing off --
