Have you heard the one about the cop who accidentally shot his mom in church during a wedding?

McCracken County Detective Cory Golightly, 32, was adjusting his jacket when the weapon fell and discharged through the holster as it hit the ground at the weekend.

(snip)

Jeanine King, who was playing piano at the service, told the news station it was "so scary and terrifying" when she heard the shot.

"My initial reaction was, 'Oh my goodness. Could that possibly be a gun?'" Ms King said.

"Then my next thought was, 'Gosh, who's in the church with a gun?'"

She said she found Mr Golightly in the foyer telling his mother to breathe and be calm.

I've said for a long time that only police should carry guns, but this leaves things in a bad light. The person obviously needs more training. There should also be an emphasis on diligence. Police budgets are tight, but every dept in America should make its officers practice regularly with their side piece. They need to allot a budget for either a certain number of bullets or a certain number of hours. Where was this guy's secure holster? Where was his training? These people are supposed to be trained and the ones protecting us. In a church of all places.
