(53,061 posts)When we are in the absurdly hot and unpleasant city of El Centro (about 4 months of the year and will be spending Thanksgiving here) we have little to do except work.
The highlight of our day is in the morning where we go to the city park and walk 3 miles.
We also visit our 'children', 23 geese who have decided not to bother to fly anywhere and split a loaf of bread among them.
It started with a core group of 11 each of whom received a name "big boy", "sonny and cher" and so on.
Then last year they drained the large pond to clean it, leaving only an inch of water which became very fouled (excuse the pun).
It was during April when the average temperature was over 100 and remained so for about 10 hours a day (El Centro is well below sea level so the hot just sits there).
The ducks were able to drink the foul water but the geese cannot. So twice a day we went over there with a big 3 gallon drum and filled it with water and gave the geese fresh water to drink. The geese came to assume that we were the 'owners' of the park and when we show up come and greet us and tell us all of the stories about what has happened (geese are very clique-ish and there are always petty squabbles, and then there are territorial disputes with the ducks).
We have taught the geese to form a line and get their bread one by one and afterwards a few come forth and receive a full hug (sitting on lap embrace) from mrs. grantcart.
I don't know how to upload our pictures but the goose in the picture is a dead wringer for 'Bert'. There are only 2 of this kind of geese and their contribution is that they don't sound like a normal goose but have a sound that is like laughter.
We have had many adventures with the geese, the people of the park watch and take pictures when the geese line up for our food. They think we are the Geese Whisperers.
Well I am off to see our 'children' and hope that everyone is going to have a great day.
