Florida State stuns UNC women at the buzzer,
With three seconds left on the clock and a top-25 upset on the line, all eyes in Carmichael Arena turned to national scoring leader TaNiya Latson and she delivered for Florida State.
Blowing by two North Carolina defenders with a shot fake, Latson weaved through a double team to finish with a layup at the rim just before the buzzer sounded off, calling game for Florida State, 86-84. The surrounding sea of Carolina blue and white was left stunned as Latsons teammates chased her across the court in disbelief.
In a game that featured 20 lead changes, Latsons consistency as one of the best scorers in the nation shined through.
The Seminoles escaped the Tar Heels without starting forward Makayla Timpson, who fouled out of the game with just under six minutes left to play. In Timpsons absence, junior guard Sydney Bowles followed behind Latson with a career-high 18 points. Bowles went 2-for-3 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.
Florida State capitalized on points in the paint and second-chance points in the fourth, outscoring Carolina 14-8 under the basket and 9-3 in second opportunities.
