Professional women's basketball team forming in Greensboro
GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) — The Piedmont Triad is getting another professional sports team.
The City of Greensboro has been announced as one of the locations that will be receiving a professional women’s basketball team in the new UPSHOT League which will begin play in May 2026.
The UPSHOT League will be operated by Zawyer Sports & Entertainment which also owns and operates the Greensboro Gargoyles professional hockey team. The league has already announced teams in Savannah Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida and a fourth team will be announced on Thursday.
A team-naming contest will later take place here.
“We are beyond thrilled to be able to launch this league and provide another quality platform for women to continue being a part of the sport they love whether it is a player on the court or a staff member in the front office,” said Zawyer Sports CEO Andy Kaufmann. “We are also grateful to be able to share this vision with several prominent and passionate individuals in our ownership group that left their own footprints in the field of athletics and entertainment.”
