Sen. Booker: GOP redistricting effort in South Carolina an 'insult' to Black voters - The Last Word - MS NOW

South Carolina Republicans are pushing for a special legislative session that could redraw, and potentially dismantle, Congressman James Clyburn's district—the only Democratic-held seat in the state.

Democratic Senator Cory Booker tells MS NOW's Jacob Soboroff that the effort is a part of a broader Republicans push to drag America "back to an era we fought so hard to get out of." - Aired on 05/06/2026.

And how black voters are being targeted.

Where I live, there’s not a lot of Black people

I don’t mean in my neighborhood, I mean in my state.
Hawaiians, Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, haole (Caucasian) people, Tongans, Samoans, we hear all these languages and they are not unusual, but we have very few Black people and nobody seems to be particularly worried about what is going on on the continent with basically codifying white power. But I am worried, very much so.

But no one told me that anyone was "different," not my parents, my grandmother nor my teachers. I mean it's not like anyone is black or white like chess pieces, we're all different. We covered the Civil Rights Movement in 9th grade history class and I found it pretty shocking, especially when I watched "Eyes on the Prize." There was such a struggle and brave people died that it sends me over the edge that, thanks to the bigot-in-chief, we're having to face this again in this country.

Evidently, because when I standing in a line 10 brought it up and people literally walked out. Left the line to not talk about it.

This would have been in the '40s when her kids were young and in Albany, NY of all places. She told me that the neighbor lady said to her "Hazel, when your kids grow up, one of them will marry an Eskimo!" I guess that this was the minorist minority that the neighbor could think of!
