Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about Tuberville calling Social Security a scam.
The Republican party isn't done playing demolition crew to Chesterton fences and a random social media comment brought the Republican desire to destroy Social Security to the forefront again.
Okay, it started simply enough. A person said, "Name a huge scam that has been normalized." Current Republican senator and Alabama Governor Hopeful shared it and said, "Social Security."
Democratic candidate for governor Doug Jones said, "Bull stuff. Alabamians need to ask themselves if they want a governor who wants to end Social Security. Tuberville makes a fortune playing the stock market on inside Senate information but clearly doesn't have a clue how Alabama seniors worked hard to earn their Social Security. Financial security in retirement isn't a game, coach.
Back in March, Tuberville said, "The money you've been paying for Social Security, Medicare for years out of your monthly paycheck or weekly paycheck, it's not up here. It's gone. The politicians have spent it. And so, we're having to tax and take money and have a bigger budget just for that."
Yes, the politicians did that. If only there was a body of government that could fix that, senator because we all know the senator who wants to be governor is definitely not a politician, but rather than, you know, properly funding the program instead of blowing hundreds of billions on unnecessary wars, vanity projects for compensating presidents, and militarizing our streets, Senator Tuberville has his own solution.
Since 2019, Tuberville has been a fan of taking people's retirements and putting it in the stock market. Back in 2019, Tuberville said he wanted to start a 401k for everybody. This is an idea that has been pushed by Republicans for years. There's nothing their billionaire donors would love more than guaranteed investments to push up their stock prices.
Okay. So, Republicans want to remove a fence. They want to remove the fence of Social Security. Before you remove a fence, you should find out why it was put up. So, why was social security started? I'm sure somebody will say to give seniors an income. And sure, that's part of it. But why?
Let me ask it a different way. When was this particular fence put up? The fence was proposed on June 8th, 1934. 1934. Smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression. Oh, so it was a way to help seniors, the disadvantaged, and so on during the Great Depression. Cool. What triggered the Great Depression? A stock market crash. Tuberville and other Republicans have said they want to give everybody a 401k.
Take as much time with that as you need to. Money in a 401k is invested in the stock market. Their replacement for a program meant to help people through economic downturns and stock market crashes is to put the money in the stock market and suggesting this at a time when we're clearly in a bubble and the stock market is more than double the GDP is just icing on the cake of fiscal irresponsibility.
Make no mistake about it, a stock market based program isn't a safety net for those who need it. It's more corporate welfare where they get the profits and you take the risk.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.

The proof is in the pudding. Before Social Security and Medicare, seniors were among the poorest people in USA. Now they are the wealthiest.
Mission accomplished.
Guaranteeing a person a basic income if they become disabled or age out of the workforce is not how scams work.
Now we need to work on raising the fortunes of all the other Americans. Universal health care would be a good start. A guaranteed living wage for full-time workers would be nice. Free trade school and college for qualified people would be helpful. A national jobs program, similar to what we had under Roosevelt, would introduce and help prepare young people joining the workforce. Civil service should be expanded, not destroyed.
For the price of an elective war or two, maybe a couple corporate tax breaks, we could make life better for everyone.
