(13,455 posts)Will a younger fascist step up to be the next Donald Trump, full of lies with funding from billionaires?
I think the answer to that question is YES -- as long as the Refascist Party is competitive in state and national elections, for 3 reasons:
1. A huge voting bloc programmed to believe the lies is already in place.
2. Unethical billionaires are not going to change their stripes.
3. Republicans lose in honest and factual policy debates. Changing their policies would go against what the billionaires are paying them for.
The R party won't significantly change until it loses elections on a broader scale and by larger margins.
The key for Democrats (especially the Harris administration) is to carry forward the economic success of Biden's term and expand on that with her own initiatives which will demonstrably benefit a large majority of Americans.

(221,922 posts)As has been said, "worse than Watergate" doesn't even begin to cover it - and in that case, Nixon resigned and his co-conspirators served time in prison. In this much more dangerous case, the co-conspirators have yet to face trial - or are still serving in Congress with no charges pending. And the leader of this rampant criminality who led an insurrection which attempted to overthrow the government - he's back on the ballot, running to have a second chance to do it all over again - or in his case, to continue his reign of criminality.

Trump's crimes are more brazen and prosecutable. It's difficult at this point to assess the damage of his first term, but a 2nd term could very well transform our Constitutional republic into a dystopian fascist nightmare.
The consequences of that not just to America but to the world are incalculable but likely to doom the future prospects of human civilization.

Nixon was brought down when the Republican party turned against him, not so with what remains of the Republican party who continue to support and enable him - even out of office. And they have inexplicably given him a second chance to finish the anti-democratic takeover of government that he started.

(13,455 posts)Yes, much worse than Watergate.
Trump is a pathological creature, and such creatures will always exist.
But they cannot rise to power without the help of intelligent people in positions of influence who see the creature for what it is.
If our Constitutional republic survives this election, historians will not treat these traitors kindly.
If fascism takes hold, facts and truth will be flushed down the Memory Hole.

Of course, the worship money makes anything that can utilize that worship a constant threat. Which means most things.
But, we won't stop the worship.
