Opinion:
The headline reads "List of stores being Targeted"
But it doesn't include Target, only that consumers are asked to spend only on absolute essentials on Feb. 28.
The idea is a show of economic force in general. And to patronize small businesses.
I buy my camera gear at a small business nearby.
From Newsweak:
Americans are pledging to stop making any purchases for a full 24 hours on February 28.
The national economic blackout is scheduled as a way for Americans to boycott major retailers that have pulled back on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies as a response to President Donald Trump.
This includes:
Amazon
Walmart
Best Buy
But participants are also asked to refrain from spending money on fast food or gas. The group pushing for the economic blackout is called The People's Union USA. If people do have to spend money, the group urges, focus on supporting small local businesses.
"If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message," the group wrote on its website.

WHY THIS MATTERS!
~ Corporations and banks only care about their bottom line.
~ If we disrupt the economy for just ONE day, it sends a powerful message.
~ If they don't listen (they wont) we make the next blackout longer (We will)

(1,218 posts)It's an easy and potentially effective thing to do. It's already getting media attention with other targeted economic boycotts to follow in March.

(96 posts)I don't support them.
No mention of SEIU, Teamsters, UAW, and union support which is only the lowest bar. Who in the heck pays all those salaries for those well to do people on the web site.
Sounds like a bunch or rich entitled people not going to the outlet stores for a day.

(406 posts)Is Starbucks essential? If you dont buy gas on Feb 28th, but buy it the day before or after, is that essential? If you bought food for the week and eat that food on Feb 28th, is that boycotting? Is it okay that the truck driver delivering baby formula joins the boycott and delays that shipment?
I think everything the Democratic Party does the next four years needs to be focused on voters. Will this gain voters in the swing states? I wish there were a positive message. Here is what we will do. Here is what they are doing and this is how we fix it. I know that would have gained votes here in PA.
Lets see. Maybe this one day economic boycott will work. Im just not seeing how.
