didn't report all of the awful things he did, especially his constant womanizing.

The begrudgingly given support for desegregation efforts increased the tension within the ‘Dixiecrat’ wing of the party, elevated the political aspirations of George Wallace, and with the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 65 after the assassination, led directly to Nixon’s carving out and subsuming these voters into the Republican Party.

...leading to hagiography. JFK, wasn't a universally popular president, but he did was straightforwardly make the case for why certain policies were important for our nation. The idea isn't to convince everyone; the idea is let people know what are your convictions, why they're your convictions, and why it makes sense for a country to embrace those convictions. This is why I chafe at the notion Democrats should act and talk like Republicans; fundamentally, that doesn't work. Democrats are successful when they talk about the future and the commitment to big ideas, even when they're not yet popular. Democrats are successful where they can clearly enunciate the moral case for the policies they embrace, and crushing the narrow concerns embraced by bigoted and haters by sharing the truth. Democrats are successful when they choose to lead.

I'm trying to figure out why and when these things became so hard.

It's a long story but I was able to vote because I was 21 (the age you had to be THEN), newly married, pregnant with my first child. And JFK was an exciting candidate. Of course, we knew nothing of his womanizing, but Jackie was SO pretty and spoke French and was a debutante. She was upper class elegant. We all imitated her hair style. She wore designer clothes that were then copied cheaply and we wore. His assassination was so shocking and her elegant service for him was so tragically beautiful. CAMELOT!

what people do not realize is that at that time in our history JFK was screwed, every agency the US had wanted to end him. WW11 vet he saw and lived combat, he was aware of Hoover wearing a dress. I digress. Peace was the solution and he was busting all the right moves, do your research! The military`industrial complex was OK with the murder. Eisenhower warned us. Should of told us a lot more but did not. We ended up with Russia running the show any how. No Kennedy in the time of history that he served was spot on. He had no idea that the forces that were out to destroy were way more powerful then those who supported him. We know now. Do your research! It wasn't the womanizing that killed him it was fellow americans.

Thinking of the poster above me...

Here is the video of his Speech at the American University.

Pretty sure that that speech did not make certain MI, CIA etc people happy.

When our 5th grade teacher came in to give the announcement that he'd been shot - she was called out of the room to get the news:
I really didn't like her, but, wow, she came back in looking ashened! It was scary!
