Ambitious Democrats Have a New Game Plan: Yak It Up About Sports

NYT : https://archive.is/yZRRG

The hot takes are flowing as a parade of ambitious Democrats talk sports, trying to accentuate their salt-of-the-earth credentials and forge stronger bonds with voters.

These Democrats are flocking to sports radio shows and podcasts as their party tries to correct for what it widely takes as an article of faith: that President Trump won back power with help from young men who found themselves drawn to him through what was once an apolitical sphere of the media.

As their party reels from the impact of Mr. Trump’s policies and struggles to craft a new strategy and message, Democrats have found that yakking about sports is perhaps the easiest way to reach skeptical or disengaged audiences who might not otherwise want to spend time listening to a politician.

In my experience, those that obsessively follow sports seldom pay attention to much of anything of importance outside of that subject.

They could tell you anything about their teams, but couldn't tell you what the 3 branches of government are or how they work.

As always there will be exceptions.

This time of year he's glued to the TV obsessing with basketball. He's a huge UCONN women's team (who isn't) and I love Geno Auriemma for what he's done for elevating women's basketball, but it gets to be too much for me.

She did the same thing to sidestep an issue during a tense time.

I thought it was pathetic.

If you can credibly work the sport circuit it's the same as working the state fair or a synagogue or a college.

This is not advice for all candidates, but it's clearly working nicely for the ones mentioned in the article.

We need to talk about the following:

- Musk is taking away your Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
- He is doing that so he and other billionaires can have a huge tax cut
- Democrats promise to tax the rich so they pay their fair share
- Trump is responsible for the ever-rising price of everything.

F__K sports. This is just idiotic. John Kerry tried to talk about hunting and Nascar and where did that get him?

Democrats cannot pretend to be something they are not and get away with it.

I’m one of them. When Trump attends football games, half the crowd boos him.
