'Being polite has led us to where we are': Iowa Democratic legislators talk way out for party

Iowa is trying to fight back.

SIOUX CITY — The opening stretch of a town hall meeting held by three Iowa Democratic legislators Saturday afternoon in Sioux City was relatively subdued but it didn't say that way forever.

During a discussion about trans issues, a speaker at the Morningside library event suggested to Iowa State Sens. Matt Blake, Herman Quirmbach and Janice Weiner that their party should reconsider how to discuss and prioritize the matter. The proposition provoked a lengthy and heated back-and-forth.

"We're not going to give up the fight. And you're right, it's wedge issue for them, they've been beating up on us, and they're going to continue to beat up on us. Well god dammit, if you don't stand for something then what the hell are you doing running for office?? Quirmbach, who represents Ames, asked those in attendance.

"Being polite has led us to where we are" ought to be framed and hanging on the walls of Schumer's office and the offices of every other Democratic leader, and stay in place there until things get better. And I say that as a lifelong Democrat who has been griping for decades about the price we pay, for playing by a set of wimpy good-conduct rules that the Republicans abandoned, long ago.

Let their governors appoint someone younger and more progressive now.

It's not always time for niceties!

Sometimes, you have to fight back!
And, boy, do we, under this regime (as it thinks of itself!).

Maaaybe, it's the fiessty NYC'r in me. If so, I'm glad; it can be a useful attribute applied carefully.
