Democrats should avoid shutdowns.

Polls show that approval ratings of the Democrats have not risen despite the crashing of Trumps ratings, even accounting for disgruntled democrats. A Gallup poll in January showed the number of people who consider themselves to be independents was at 45%. A recent poll by CNN had it at 47%. Democrats are doing well in special elections, but it appears that independents are voting with Democrats as a check on Trump, not because they are enthused about Democrats. Shutdowns are not helping the Democratic Party. This is especially true when it gets to the point where people are missing paychecks, there are long lines at the airports, or you have over stressed air traffic controllers.

It has been argued the Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House, so therefore the Democrats cannot be responsible, but you have the 60-vote threshold in the Senate, and the Republicans are not expected to go the reconciliation route. It would be completely reasonable for people to at least partly blame the Democrats for any consequences of the shutdown. People are responsible for their own actions. Refusing to fund the government is an action.

To this point, shutdowns have not achieved any of the supposed goals.

The best way for Democrats to affect people's lives is through winning elections. Shutdowns are not helping us do that. Make a difference in people's lives through winning elections. That is how we become the dominant party.

their reality of more hardships for the middle class and the poor?

I'm pretty many indies have heard of the "save act". That act alone will completely destroy our democracy and put the GQP in control for many years.

You want to make a difference in people's lives - win elections.

I am trying to influence the Democratic Party to be more strategic and less impulsive. The way to stop the Republicans is to win elections.

"It would be completely reasonable for people to at least partly blame the Democrats for any consequences of the shutdown."

No. The republicans control executive branch, the judicial branch (with judicial branch ceding more to the executive daily - see this past week's court decisions if confused), and majority in both houses of Congress.

REPUBLICANS own all of it - the Iran war, the high gas prices, the high grocery prices, the destruction of the east wing, the f-ing algae in the pool. All of it.

And I will not sit back while people come on this site, after voting for that mango mess, and try to blame democrats for the fall out. Just no.

"Republicans are not expected to go the reconciliation route"?

Painting everything in the best possible light to favor republicans and blame democrats is not going to convince me of anything.

Right now, there are absolutely no bills on the table designed to force a government shutdown. They are debating funding limits and that kind of thing but it's June. Federal funding doesn't run out on anything until Sept. 30. Coming on here to blame democrats during the process is not a good look.

the approval rating of the Democratic Party. If the 60-vote threshold did not exist, then the shutdowns would not be possible.

but it sounds like what you really want to do is argue about Senate Rule XXII (the filibuster)

Which is another republican talking point ...
