Iran day one: Three U.S. service members killed, five seriously wounded

Tom Cotton, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Saturday that he believes that there could be "weeks, not days, of joint efforts" by the U.S. and its allies in Iran after the massive military mission launched overnight. The U.S. and Israel announced a major military attack called "Operation Epic Fury" against Iran early Saturday. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is presumed dead after the mission, U.S. and Israeli officials said.

Shortly after the U.S. announced major combat operations in Iran this morning, military personnel and residents were warned about an incoming missile attack. Within minutes, explosions could be heard across the city and plumes of smoke were seen rising from the U.S. base.

(The Guardian) Iran struck the world-famous Fairmont hotel in Dubai, setting the hotel alight, as the war launched by the US and Israel on Iran quickly spread to the rest of the Middle East on Saturday. Residents watched in shock as an Iranian missile hit the five-star hotel in Dubai's luxurious Palm Jumeirah area. Social media videos showed fires breaking out near the entrance of the hotel, which led to four people being injured. Later Dubai authorities said debris from an intercepted drone caused a fire at the city's famous luxury hotel the Burj Al Arab and Dubai's international airport.

More than 3,400 flights were canceled Sunday across seven airports in the Mideast, according to flight tracker Flightradar24. Airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and Qatars capital, Doha, and Manama in Bahrain were among those closed.

(AP) At least nine people were killed and about two dozen were wounded in violent clashes with police and paramilitary forces Sunday after hundreds of protesters stormed the U.S. Consulate in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, authorities said. The violence came hours after the United States and Israel attacked Iran and killed the countrys supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Police and officials at a hospital in Karachi said at least 25 people were also wounded in the clashes and some of them were in critical condition.

Oil markets were closed on Saturday when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran that spurred retaliatory strikes across the Middle East. The Iranian military had cautioned ships to avoid the area, saying that passage through the strait is currently unsafe, according to Tasnim, a news outlet affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. But a U.S. official said there was no evidence Iran was attempting a military blockade of the strait.

Bolton chuckled to himself and told the voters they made the mistake of thinking Trump has any sort of foundational philosophy at all.

The photo shows a makeshift room surrounded by black curtains and multiple maps of the region. One Israeli reporter described the room as "the situation room at Mar-a-Lago," referring to the Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) where other presidents monitor military operations.
