10. It's a Hail Mary to break the Russian Army.

The Oligarchs and the population are not happy with Putin, and the corruption in the system has ensured the Army cannot fight an actual war of needed to protect Russia itself.
It's easy to fund an influence based coup (Hungary, US, Brexit), an insurgency or a revolution in a developing country (Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea); it's a lot harder to ramp up an efficient army and actually get in and fight for territory.

This is a form of MAD being played out. If Ukraine is going to go down, they're going to take Russia with them. And it's probably going to be easier for Ukraine to rebuild than Russia.
