we've been one for a long time, although it's gotten worse and we used to mask it better.

I do think part of Trump's appeal is that he states in plain, blunt terms what many involved in the goverment have acted on more discreetly... I'm thinking, e.g., of the decades of US interference in other countries – Argentina, Afghanistan, Brazil, Chile, Congo, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Guatemala, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nicaragua, Palestine, Syria, and yes, Ukraine, to mention just a few – in many cases (including Ukraine) supporting coups against democratically-elected governments in an effort, too often successful, to replace them with a more compliant dictator.

This is, of course, not what I want our country to be, whether overtly (under Trump) or covertly.
