Russell Brand fears criminal charges in the US, his lawyers told a New York court preparing to hear sexual assault allegations against him in a civil case. Brand was sued in 2023 in a lawsuit brought by an extra on the 2010 romantic comedy Arthur, starring Brand. The alleged victim, using the pseudonym Jane Doe, accused the British actor and comedian of exposing himself to cast members before sexually assaulting her in a lavatory on set.

Both Brand and Warner Bros, which is also named as a defendant, deny the allegations. Appearing before a judge in the New York Supreme Court last week, Brand’s lawyer, Mark Cuccaro, said Brand had a “reasonable belief criminal prosecution is possible in the US based on allegations tantamount to criminal sexual misconduct occurring in the US, of which he has been falsely accused both by this civil plaintiff and several others through the media”.

It also emerged that Warner Bros had offered to hand over outtakes of Brand in Arthur as part of evidence. Patrick Lamparello, a lawyer for Warner Bros, said the company had “some hours of video outtake footage … four or five hours, it could be more, around eight”.

The development came as Brand was charged with rape and sexual assaults against four women in the UK. The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Friday that the comedian, 49, had been charged with rape, indecent assault, oral rape and two counts of sexual assault. A first court appearance is scheduled for May 2. Brand denies all the allegations.
