In reply to the discussion: Don't kid yourself. This is the REAL reason Democrats lost 2024 [View all]synni
(537 posts)He won 2 terms. Race isn't the issue.
Sexism? I'll get to that in a moment.
But historically, it's rare that any vice president gets elected...and all but one of those vice presidents have been men.
The problem is that the Democrats ignored the fact that the American people were struggling economically. I had been selling online for more than 20 years, and my sales on every platform dried up completely in 2022. Regular customers who stopped buying were telling me that they simply couldn't afford to buy anything that was non-essential.
I, myself, was in huge financial trouble, when my pandemic stimulus savings ran out. I was hitting up community organizations and churches, just to keep my utilities from being shut off. Those resources were reporting much higher numbers of people seeking help...it wasn't just me. Food banks were being stretched to the limit, as well.
I was just VERY lucky that I was finally accepted for disability. I was on the verge of losing my home.
I don't care how many statistics told us that Wall Street was doing fine in 2024. John and Jane Doe we're struggling, and they wanted to hear what the candidates were going to do to change that.
Did Trump lie about how he would help the economy? OF COURSE! But when a liar pretends to be sympathetic, while the honest person ignores the problem...people are going to believe the liar.
Bill Clinton won by saying, "I feel your pain." Kamala Harris lost by acting as if people weren't even in pain. Of course she was right about Trump being a threat to democracy, but not enough people realized that this could ever happen in America. So they were seduced by the lies and the old, flawed reasoning of blaming the current president for the bad economy.
Before you cry sexism, remember that people were turning on Joe Biden before he even dropped out of the race.
Joe Biden is not a woman, and he certainly isn't African-American.
The problem was, our party kept hyping how "great" our economy was under Biden, while people couldn't find jobs, couldn't pay their rent/mortgage or utilities.
Another big blow to Biden was when he caved, and allowed the GOP to impose insane work requirements on SNAP beneficiaries. In my state, the work age was raised from 45 to 60...far beyond the measure that was passed.
I was furious. I nearly lost my SNAP when I was disabled and had NO income. Except that I was "lucky" enough to be in treatment for physical and mental disabilities. That excluded me from the work requirement that Joe Biden DID NOT VETO.
Sure, the GOP could have overridden the veto. But Biden should have resisted that work requirement change until the end! Show the public that you may have lost, but you fought for them!
I still voted for his VP (Kamala), but people remember such betrayals. Yes, I know Trump was hell-bent on making the SNAP program worse, but remember what I just wrote about liars?
You don't hold on to Democratic voters by rubber-stamping the worst Republican policies.
I still remember the day I got that letter, threatening to kick me off SNAP because I was only in my 50's. I remember crying, shaking, literally CONTEMPLATING SUICIDE, because Joe Biden folded like a lawn chair when poor people needed him most.
Things like this are why people have lost faith in the Democrats, and why people fall for FILTHY LIARS who tell them what they want to hear.
If we even have free elections anymore, Dems can win back the public by grasping what Bernie Sanders has been saying, and what the party used to understand so well:
It's the economy.
