Religion controls people by making them feel guilty for not acting as their leaders want them to act. Religions are mainly based on faith and not fact.

Many gods who are the one true god and going to wars over that god.

Why should I worship a god who supposedly told Joshua to go into Jerico and kill every man, woman, and child with the sword? Maybe I'm not remembering my Old Testament right?
