...what you did do was point out the hypocrisy and self-serving idiocy of the orange man-baby. Nothing you said about Charlie Kirk was a joke, or insulting. If anyone intimated you were saying the shooter was MAGA, they were listening with the intent to be offended. It's all very rich from people who by and large mocked the attack on Paul Pelosi.

A sincere apology is fine, but it was unwarranted, and a sop of a condition your very weak employer wanted. I would have done the same.

But the silver lining is something that's been pointed out a lot over the last few days: taking action gets results.
