4. The tech bros buying our government and media refer to us as "NPCs" (non-player characters)

In computer gaming, non-player characters are placed in a game by the programmers so the "real" players have someone to interact with.

Non-player characters are like objects in the game to be used by the player. Their fate is of no consequence to the player. Depending on the game, a player may treat them kindly, may help them, or the player may hurt them, kill them, steal from them, use them as cannon fodder in battle. It's all part of the game.

In other words, they see us as objects on a game board that can be manipulated to the player's advantage.
