In reply to the discussion: Epstein and Bob Weir [View all]Fiendish Thingy
(22,181 posts)The clinical definition of pedophilia? Go look in a DSMV- theres no mention of either Bob Weir or Jeffery Epstein, or any other specific individual, just symptoms and behaviour patterns.
Did you miss the part where I was a licensed therapist working in childrens mental health for over 30 years?
Pedophilia is a diagnosis, but not a crime unless/until someone acts on their urges.
Child sexual abuse is a crime that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. People who sexually abuse teenagers are not pedophiles (which IMO is just a lazy catch all epithet), they are rapists and often have antisocial personality disorder/sociopathy.
Statutory rape is black and white in some peoples minds, dependent solely on the birthdates of those involved, but in the real world, there is quite a bit of gray area, such as the example of of the teen couple where one person is 19, the other 17 - if the contact is consensual, do you still prosecute the 19 year old? They dont in California.
As for the posters anecdote about Bob Weir, I said it was wrong, and, depending on the state, fits the criteria for statutory rape/unlawful sexual contact with a minor, but diagnostically its not pedophilia. If my precisely worded statement strikes you as minimizing or excusing Weirs behaviour, that is your interpretation, perhaps emotional projection, but its not my message.
Not sure how I can be any clearer about my position.
