(3,427 posts)As they release new versions of iOS, those with older iPhones find that their devices don't run as fast, apps don't function as smoothly, etc. It's nothing at all to do with the capabilities or power of the device since things haven't changed that dramatically over the last few years. It has everything to do with Apple oh-so-subtly encouraging people to ditch their "obsolete" devices and splash the cash for a new one.
And it's not just Apple engaging in that kind of shady business, either. All the major manufacturers do it, particularly as the law of diminishing returns begins to take hold more fully and the performance gap between one generation and the next narrows. If they can't get you to bite via slick marketing they'll just force your hand in another way.
We are very much a throw-away society, you're exactly right. Everyone acts as if the resources will last forever. The bill is coming due.
