... younger generations will opt out in even greater numbers and remain vulnerable to extremist right-wing propaganda, so long as there is a class of people to scapegoat and a promise to end the struggle -- however absurd the "solution." When people are in dire straits; when they have no faith in their ability to enact meaningful reform, their racial identity becomes less relevant. They may be well aware that opting out empowers those who hate them, but when the "system" appears hopelessly rigged against them, it it gets tougher and tougher to inspire people to get in/stay in the "game."
And I'm taking seriously transformative things like Piketty's Inheritance for All as part other, interrelated, big, progressive reforms including universal health care. More on what we absolutely must fight for here:
