(4,446 posts)1. My Mom was diagnosed with bladder cancer over 25 years ago. She had some treatments (not chemo or radiation) over the next few years, never needed surgery, and she turned 92 last October. Still going strong.
2. My brother in law was diagnosed with prostate cancer a couple of years ago. He opted for radiation and it has turned into a total nightmare for him. The radiologist, who is no longer employed by the hospital in Boston, completely fucked up and now my poor brother in law is in terrible pain especially when he pees. He's been seeing so many specialists to try and get some relief and one of those doctors told him the cancer would have never killed him if he had done no treatment. That really pissed him off as he wishes his original doctors had been honest about the prognosis versus just turning to immedicate treatment. So my advice to you is to have very honest discussions with your doctors before deciding on a treatment. Find out if you're more likely to die of old age vs this prostate cancer and then decide which treatment makes the most sense. Get second and third opinions.
