He may be doing what Putin wants him fo do for now, but that doesn't mean he "knows exactly what he's doing." If Putin has any sense at all, he's probably beginning to realize how untethered from reality Trump is and that this is going to make his actions harder and harder to contol or predict as time goes on.

It's possible Putin has figured all of this out but still assumes Trump is completely under his control. That may still be the case NOW, but there's no way it can last indefinitely, at the rate Trump's mind is deteriorating.
