42. Women's Hockey Team

There once was a team clad in red, white, and blue,
Whose slapshots and spirit just flew;
With gold round their necks,
They fielded requests—
From places both formal and new.

An invite arrived from the Hill,
For a speech steeped in pomp and in thrill;
But schedules were tight,
With prior plans set right,
So they answered with courtesy still.

They thanked them for honor bestowed,
For praise that so graciously flowed;
Though they could not appear
At the grand speech that year,
Their gratitude clearly was showed.

“We’re grateful,” their spokesman conveyed,
“For the nod to the history made;
It’s an honor indeed,
To be asked—yes, agreed—
Though other commitments must stay.”

So champions steady and keen
Balanced glory with calendars clean;
With appreciation expressed,
They declined the request—
Still gold-medaled, gracious, serene.
