In the reactionary backlash to the Civil Rights Movement, since the days of Reagan, Limbaugh and Gingrich, Republican propaganda has been laser-focused on sowing division, in hopes of ending up with the bigger half. Their major stratagem has been to demonize liberals and liberalism — quite literally, in many cases. Rather than try to attract voters to the superiority of the "conservative" viewpoint, it's been more a matter of trying to chase them away from liberalism. It became an enormous cottage industry when Limbaugh discovered that demagoguery was also a cash cow.
