Microsoft puts $900 million price tag on buyouts for thousands of workers [View all]

Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) put a price tag on its early retirement program on Wednesday.

Amy Hood, the company's chief financial officer, said on a call with analysts that the Redmond tech company plans to spend roughly $900 million on buyouts for about 7% of its U.S. workers.

For Microsoft, the buyout offers will be pitched to employees whose age and time at the company add up to 70 years or higher. The buyouts, the first in the company’s history, will be offered to eligible employees on May 7.

Microsoft has been hunting for ways to cut costs amid heavy spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure. For the first three months of 2026, Microsoft said it spent $31.9 billion on capital expenditures, mostly on costly chips and data centers.
