Democrat Chedrick Greene won Tuesday's pivotal special election in Michigan's 35th Senate District after his Republican opponent, Jason Tunney, conceded the race at about 10:20 p.m.
As of 10:40 p.m., Greene, a Saginaw firefighter, had about 58% of the initial vote, while Tunney, a businessman and lawyer from Saginaw Township, had about 41%. The Libertarian candidate, Ali Sledz of Midland, had about 2% of the votes cast.
However, those numbers represented only a fraction of the total vote that's expected out of Bay, Midland and Saginaw counties. And the absentee ballots in the district were expected to come in heavily in Greene's favor.
"Tonight, we fell short in the special election, but Im incredibly proud of what this campaign accomplished together," Tunney said in a statement. "We worked hard every single day to run the best campaign."
