A White House ceremony meant to celebrate America’s most physically active young people somehow turned into one of those “did that really just happen?” moments.

During the Presidential Physical Fitness Youth Challenge signing ceremony in the Oval Office, President Donald Trump told a young girl, in front of a room full of people, that her height would stop her from ever playing volleyball. Yes, at an event literally designed to hype kids up.

The exchange was caught on video and quickly made its rounds across multiple channels. What should have been a wholesome, gold-star kind of day took a sharp detour into viral clip territory. And that was only the beginning of how strange things got.

The girl at the center of the moment has not been publicly identified, but she was among several kids invited to the South Lawn to play sports in celebration of the initiative's announcement. So we’re talking proud parents, big smiles, and a once-in-a-lifetime Oval Office visit. When she mentioned she liked volleyball, the conversation could have gone in a dozen encouraging directions. But it did not.
