Usually it's enforced via JS on an enclosing element. Most times I can temporarily disable JS (Firefox extension), paste in the password, and then re-enable JS. I think there are extensions that specifically do this but I'm leery of adding a bunch of unknowns.

Sounds like you have quite a background in IT. Wanna exchange notes? (Mine goes back to to 60s.)
