Over the last few decades the majority of congressional seats have been gerrymandered to favor Republicans. Typically, the only threat to a Republican incumbent's' re-election in "safe" seats arises from the most extreme ideological wing of their own party. These extremist primary challengers no longer represent the interests of mainstream Republican voters in the district, they are usually backed by corporate money coming from the outside, and once elected answer only to them.
