Netanyahu Finally Meets the Republican President He Deserves

Benjamin Netanyahu has spent more than a decade believing he had solved American politics. Democrats could be managed, humiliated, pressured, and then expected to come home. American Jews could be taken for granted. Democratic presidents could be outflanked by Republican speakers, Republican donors, Republican evangelicals, and Republican presidential candidates. Iran could be used as the eternal prop in this drama: the ticking bomb, the red line, the reason every American administration had to defer to him, the excuse for every escalation, every snub, every lecture, and every partisan stunt.

Now Netanyahu has finally met the end point of that bargain: Donald Trump.

Trump is doing to Netanyahu exactly what Trump does to everyone eventually. He is using him, insulting him, overruling him, and ultimately discarding him. In the past several days, he has proceeded to trash Netanyahu, his erstwhile friend, while praising the Iranian regime, saying, “The current Iranian leadership are very rational people. They are nice to deal with, they are strong and smart people. They are not radicalized, and they are looking to help their country.”

Netanyahu, on the other hand, is “fucking crazy,” according to Trump. In a final rebuke to his erstwhile ally, Trump denied Israel’s formal request yesterday to see the memorandum of understanding that will, at least temporarily, end the war Israel and Iran began jointly.
