If there is something to celebrate, it is the surrender of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781, the drawing up of the Constitution in 1787, its being ratified (June 21, 1788), or coming into force on March 4, 1789. March 4 was also the day in 1797 when the first peaceful transfer of power occurred in the United States when John Adams was inaugurated as the second President. "Peaceful transfer of power" prior to that usually meant that some monarch had joined the dearly departed in his sleep (Louis XVI didn't qualify).
