Giorgia Meloni was Trump’s favorite leader in Europe. Italy’s prime minister. He called her “fantastic,” and said she was “taking Europe by storm.”
Then she stopped bowing.
When Trump went after the Pope this spring, Meloni called it “unacceptable.” Trump responded, saying she lacked courage. Then last week at the G7 summit, Trump went on Italian TV to tell the world that Meloni “begged” him for a photo—and that he only allowed it because he felt sorry for her.
She didn’t flinch. “Donald Trump’s statements are completely made-up. I am frankly astonished,” she said. Then: “I and Italy never beg.” Her foreign minister canceled his trip to the US in disgust. Even her political enemies defended her.
