In reply to the discussion: Trump posts that he is now in a battle against Communism in the USA. [View all]Maeve
(43,555 posts)13. Can we finally have a real discussion of what communism is and is not?
Communism centers on common ownership, distribution based on need, and the end of private ownership, something that ain't gonna happen in the US (and the end of money, which they tried in Star Trek, but just didn't work)
What we have growing in America is social democracy, which supports a gradual, reformist and democratic approach to achieving social equality. Much of that is a reaction to greed running unchecked (I'm looking at you, vulture capitalists) and a rise of oligarchy
Admitted I'm simplifying to some extent, but I grew up in the shadow of the Red Scare and people conflating socialism with Stalinism and communism with totalitarianism. Different systems all around

According to his definition of communism, he is one. The tariffs qualify him as a communist.

What a tired old trope. These people have zero vision and only rely on the past, hence the dismantling of progress.
