Overly simplified, the reasoning is that Republican voters tend to be wealthier. They tend to have jobs that allow time off to vote without penalty, or they are retired or stay at home wives who can easily find time to go to the polls.

In contrast, overly simplified, many Democrats work jobs that require time cards or specific shifts that don't allow flexibility for time off to vote. Disabled people find it difficult to vote in person. Rural people may have to drive long distances to the polls. Poorer people often don't have access to transportation. They may be caring for older people or children at home and be unable to go to the polls. Health care providers may work long shifts on Election Day that make it impossible for them to get to the polls to vote in person.

Republican tricks like closing polling places, limiting voting hours, and stocking polling sites in Democratic precincts with too few machines limit access further.

Voting by mail is a simple solution that equalizes access to voting. That's why it's being demonized and destroyed by the Republicans.
