Anonymous donor to pay Montgomery's $25K fine for violating Confederate monument law [View all]

An anonymous donor has agreed to pay the city of Montgomery’s $25,000 fine for violating state law when it renamed Jefferson Davis Avenue in honor of civil rights attorney Fred Gray.

Montgomery violated the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act, which passed the state Legislature in 2017 and prohibits renaming buildings and streets with historical names -- including Confederate names and symbols -- that have been in place at least 40 years.

Mayor Steven Reed told the city council Tuesday that an anonymous donor stepped up to pay the fine and suggested the donor could pay subsequent fines as the city looks to rename other streets that may run afoul of the law, WSFA reported.

In October, the city renamed Jefferson Davis Avenue for Gray, who represented civil rights icon Rosa Parks and grew up on the street.
