Group chat planning for Houthi strike was 'mistake,' Johnson says [View all]

The speaker said the White House would “make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

SpeakerMike Johnson said Monday that top White House national security officials made a “mistake” in sharing secret war plans over an unsecured Signal chat — including, inadvertently, with a journalist — but said he believed the matter would be quickly addressed.

“Clearly, I think the White House has acknowledged it’s a mistake,” Johnson told reporters Tuesday, adding that he expected that “it will tighten up and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Johnson said he had just spoken with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office while attending a White House event with Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry.

The text exchanges mistakenly sent to and reported by Atlantic Editor Jeffrey Goldberg involved Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Vice President JD Vance, among others, discussing impending strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen who have threatened shipping lanes to and from the Suez Canal.
