I will often try to open the image in a tab by itself and do what you mention - copy THAT link (but would still have to RIGHT-CLICK to get the image link and then I can paste it in a tab/window). That is when I can really confirm if it has a graphic file extension and is even viewable (and not in some kind of webpage "frame" ).
