This is precisely what they wanted.

They want mediocre white (mostly)men in charge. They want everyone they think is inferior kept in positions of inferiority. They are driven by so much fear, anxiety and anger over what they see as their world going away that they will and did do anything to try and stop it.

Conservatism has always been about resisting change although understanding that change is inevitable and thus would require adjusting to change. Reactionaryism, conservatism since Reagan although its seeds were planted long before, is about violence to devolve change back to an extreme illusion of what the world looked like and should always look like frozen in amber.
