1. You shall not commit adultery. Well, Donald cheated on his wife with a porn star – we know that his efforts to hush it up led to his felony conviction. A Newsweek article provides evidence that he cheated on his wives (he’s had three) multiple times.
2. Honor your father and mother. He seems to have followed this one. He frequently spoke well of his parents despite his father’s overbearing nature. For example in his book The Art of the Deal, he wrote: “The most important influence on me, growing up, was my father, Fred Trump. I learned a lot from him.” and ”my mother was the perfect housewife.”
3. Remember to keep the Lord’s day holy. Most people in today’s secular society have failed this one, and Trump is no exception. For example, he held his famous Madison Square Garden rally October 27, 2024 on a Sunday. No big deal, but still no check mark on this one.
4. You shall not murder. Despite Trump’s claim that he could shoot someone on 5th avenue and not lose any votes, there’s no evidence that he has personally murdered anyone. Trump’s policies on the other hand, have led to the deaths of uncounted individuals around the world. His policy, for example, of dragging his heels at the start of the COVID pandemic led to many more people dying of the disease than if he had acted quickly and with resolution (see, for example, this Washington Post article). His more recent cutting off of foreign aid to many impoverished countries around the world will likely result in thousands (or more) of children dying from malnutrition, lack of medical care, violence resulting from economic instability, and more. Isn’t that a kind of murder?
5. You shall not bear false witness. In other words, you shouldn’t lie. Trump lies through his teeth. Although he has never been convicted of perjury in a court of law, in his speeches he lies right and left like there was no tomorrow. No need to back this up with news reports, since any of his speeches contain numerous falsehoods. Oh, okay, here’s a link, just to be consistent. According to Wikipedia: ”Donald Trump has made tens of thousands of false or misleading claims, including during his first and second terms as President of the United States.”
6. You shall have no other gods before you. To my knowledge, no one has ever accused Trump of bowing down to Hindu idols or Polynesian deities. But if you include ”wealth” as a god, he certainly has put that up at the top of his priorities. In that sense, he has worshiped the god Mammon (in the New Testament Mammon is commonly thought to mean money, material wealth, or any entity that promises wealth). According to Politico, ”Some pundits have speculated that white evangelicals are attracted to Trump because his mammon-and-megalomania message resonates with the prosperity gospel of many evangelical megachurches, which emphasize health and wealth in this world over salvation in the next.”
7. You shall not steal. From the New York State Attorney General’s office: Trump was ”forced to pay more than $2 million in court-ordered damages to eight different charities for illegally misusing charitable funds at the Trump Foundation for political purposes.” CNN cites the contractors that Trump cheated when building his Atlantic City casino The Taj Mahal. And those are just the tip of the iceberg.
8. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain. This commandment, like keeping the Sabbath, is not a huge issue in today’s profane culture, but for the record, yes, Trump has taken the name of the Lord in vain. The Week’s website, for example said: ”Donald Trump is the first president to make C-SPAN unsuitable viewing for children. ‘The president used language that some may find offensive,’ reads a disclaimer on C-SPAN’s website for a speech he gave in July [2019]. In that speech, President Trump said, “If you don’t support me, you’re going to be so goddamn poor.”
9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. In other words, you should not desire things that belong to others. Where do I start? Well, for example, take his recent idea to grab Gaza and throw out all two million Palestineans from their own God-given land, while he builds a Club Gaza on the coastline that he will financially benefit from. Or Greenland, or the Panama Canal. As far as other things Trump might covet, don’t get me started.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. No one can get inside the mind of Trump and truly know if he does this, but his words give us some clear indication of his intent. Take for example, the famous ”secret” Access Hollywood tapes that had him confessing: “I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait . . . When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.”
Okay, let’s do some adding up. On a scale of 1 to 10, on the question of Trump following the Ten Commandments, he scores a 1. He has not followed 9 of the 10 Commandments. But he wants them to be posted for every school child to read. Do what I say, not what I do. And 77,302,580 of you voted for this man. We’re in terrible times, folks, and winter may last for 1000 years.
