Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) was unable to confirm President Donald Trumps claims that Irans nuclear facilities had been completely and totally obliterated by U.S. strikes when pressed by CNN on Tuesday. As a member of the Gang of Eight, do you agree with the assessment from President Trump that the key nuclear enrichment facilities in Iran have been completely and totally obliterated? asked CNN chief congressional correspondent Manu Raju.
Thune replied, Well, I dont Im not sure I have, uh you might want to hear from Senator [Tom] Cotton, who chairs the intelligence committee, and answer on the full extent, but we know for sure that their nuclear program was set back considerably, and that is a victory not only for that region, but for our countrys national security interests.
Trump claimed last week that Irans key nuclear enrichment facilities had been completely and totally obliterated after the U.S. military bombed several locations in the country. The president repeated the claim in several Truth Social posts, boasting, It was my great honor to Destroy All Nuclear facilities & capability.
Three unnamed sources familiar with the matter, however, rejected Trumps claims on Tuesday, telling CNN that the strikes against Iran only set them back maybe a few months, tops.
