President Donald Trump threatened to revoke his endorsement of any Republican senator who fails to back his push to defund PBS and NPR as he seeks to tip the scale ahead of a Senate showdown over a $9.4 billion spending rollback.
The Senate is poised to vote next week on the rescissions package already passed by the House in a razor-thin 214-212 margin. At stake is $1.1 billion earmarked for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds PBS, NPR, and hundreds of local stations. Posting to Truth Social on Thursday night, the president declared:
It is very important that all Republicans adhere to my Recissions Bill and, in particular, DEFUND THE CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS and NPR), which is worse than CNN & MSDNC put together. Any Republican that votes to allow this monstrosity to continue broadcasting will not have my support or Endorsement. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled an amendment process is likely, as several Republicans have voiced concerns over proposed cuts to AIDS prevention, public health, and local media outlets. The bill must pass by a July 18 deadline or the funding remains untouched.
