who had a network of us worker bees to keep him abreast of what was happening in the trenches. We called it his "mole net". This guy was the only person, civilian or military, who actually wanted to interact with us during my time there. The rest just wanted to inhabit their own little world and hang out with each other. The best few days we ever had was once when all the management went on a 3 day retreat. We barely realized they were gone, none were missed and we never missed a beat.

Sometimes the military execs would send junior officers into the trenches with orders to get us civil servants in line, but usually they ended up going native, meaning they saw us every day, saw what we did to keep the place running, came to like and appreciate us and then took our side when push came to shove.
